ROLES/RANGE:
Younger Alyce (lyric coloratura soprano) – 20-30s – represents Thompson’s idealized view of his wife. Despite discontentment that might be lurking beneath, on the surface, all is rosy.

Older Alyce (lyric soprano) – nearly 40 – bitter and cynical, she made choices that others judged as selfish but claims she made them to survive. She has become an independent woman and won’t “go back” to being dependent on her husband “to give her a few dollars to buy nylons.”

Younger Thompson (tenor) – 20-30s – the idealist who had a perfect attendance record in church school and believed he was madly in love with Alyce, but put “the Army” ahead of his wife and children. Ironically, many of his superiors were critical of his judgment skills and abilities, and he was often passed over for promotion. Yet, somehow he survived a grueling ordeal.

Older Thompson (high baritone/tenor) – 40 but appears older when he emerges after 9 years of imprisonment (including 5 in solitary) that included torture, malnutrition and maltreatment. He returned to a changed and very unfamiliar world, to a wife no longer dependent on him, and to a country that barely acknowledged the sacrifices he made.
